What Is Telnet?

Telnet is one of the earliest protocols designed to allow users to remotely access and manage computers over a network. It enables a user on one machine (the client) to log into and execute commands on another machine (the server) as if they were physically present at that system.

Telnet operates using a client-server model and provides a command-line interface (CLI) for remote communication. It was widely used for system administration, remote device management, and testing network services before more secure alternatives became standard.

Telnet (short for Teletype Network)

Telnet operates over TCP/IP networks and traditionally uses port 23.
